TPS Announces November Summit to Launch Equity Initiative

Creating Brave Space: Addressing Issues of Inclusion and Equity in Arts Institutions

Join Theatre Puget Sound for a transformative community discussion tackling what is arguably one of the most pressing issues of our time; issues of diversity, inclusion and equity. Arts organization across the nation are having to redefine who they are, and who they want to be in relation to their communities.  Join us for an engaging conversation led by Carmen Morgan, national consultant to the arts, on best practices, coalition building, and possible next steps for collaboration for building equity in the arts.

The complexity we face around issues of equity extends far beyond what we can address in a single conversation. But we hope this beginning will inspire participants to commit to the on-going learning required by all of us to create lasting change.

This Summit seeks to move arts institutions beyond conversation. The two days will consist of a presentation open to all followed by an intensive training opportunity for a limited number of organizations and led by Carmen Morgan.

An application will be available after the Summit for a select cohort of organizations to participate in a 12 month guided intensive program to create change in our organizations.

This Summit is presented by Theatre Puget Sound with major support from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and in partnership with Seattle Office of Arts & Culture4CultureWashington State Arts Commission (ArtsWA), Seattle Center and the Seattle Office for Civil Rights.

Carmen Morgan is a well-respected national consultant on diversity, inclusion, and equity issues. For the past six years, she has served as the Diversity and Inclusion Consultant for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), where she addressed structural and organizational issues of inclusion and equity. With her guidance, OSF has implemented innovative programming, policies, and has created new organizational structures to support ongoing diversity and inclusion efforts.

In addition, Carmen currently serves as the Diversity Consultant for Theatre Communication Group (TCG) where she provides guidance for their diversity and inclusion initiatives and programming. In 2012, Carmen partnered with TCG to launch a national Diversity and Inclusion Institute that now supports 22 theatre organizations throughout the US on diversity and inclusion issues. She provides resources, intensive skills-building, and programmatic oversight for this national cohort. Carmen created the concept and has led the strategic planning of this three-year collaborative effort.  She also provides customized resources and training around diversity and inclusion issues to theatres, non-profit organizations, and foundations nation-wide.

Carmen is also currently the Director of Leadership Development in Interethnic Relations (LDIR), a nationally recognized program co-sponsored by Asian Americans Advancing Justice, the Central American Resource Center, and the Martin Luther King Dispute Resolution Center. Carmen currently oversees LDIR’s national human relations and intergroup relations programming.
