Season Announcements: 5th Avenue & Intiman

March is the season for season announcements, with both Intiman and 5th Avenue announcing their 2010-2011 season, with ArtsWest to follow.  We’ll be spotlighting season announcements as they come in, starting with 5th Ave and Intiman Theatre.

  • Intiman‘s first season under the direction of Kate Whoriskey begins with Paradise Lost by Clifford Odets, opening March 19.
    • Following that is The Thin Place by Sonya Schneider, a world premiere comprised of a series of interviews of Seattle residents.  The one actor in this show is Gbenga Akinnagbe from The Wire which means I have no choice but to see this play.
    • Ruined by Lynn Nottage is next, directed by Kate Whoriskey herself.
    • Then Moliere’s A Doctor in Spite of Himself, a chance for some great vaudevillian action..
    • and finishing with the classic The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

  • 5th Avenue Theatre: opening their 30th anniversary season is In The Heights, winner of four 2008 Tony Awards.  The show promises hot Latin rhythms and contemporary sounds.
    • For the holiday season, 5th brings us A Christmas Story: The Musical! a brand new musical based, of course, on the classic 1983 film of the same name (minus the musical part.)
    • Joining forces with ACT, Vanities – A New Musical is a long-running off-Broadway play and will be performed at ACT.
    • Next To Normal is a very new musical about “a story about the stop/start life of a bipolar mother and the hell her unreality wreaks on her family as she rides the sharp edge between coping and insanity.”  I’m laughing already!
    • Here’s my top pick of the season: 9 to 5: The Musical.  Really, as long as “9 to 5” is in there, how could this show go wrong?
    • Guys & Dolls – I am not sure what there is left to say about this show.  It has a lot of catchy songs?
    • Closing out the season is Oklahoma! a show that was last seen at 5th Avenue in their very first season.

Definitely some interesting choices in both companies.  Any in particular you’re excited to see?  We’ll be highlighting season lists as they come, so keep checking back!
